The Secrets to Success, Revealed – and validated statistically!

Posted on March 30, 2012 | In Firepole Marketing Updates

So, guess what?

All that stuff that you’re told to do that will increase your chances of being successful?

Do them.

Well, most of them. We’ve got the statistics to prove it.

In March 2012 we surveyed 149 people about their “success habits” in an attempt to identify whether any of these commonly accepted “factors of success” actually do correlate to success. Expressed differently, are these habits linked in any way to actual success?

From these results, we looked at people who self-declared themselves satisfied with their level of success and those who weren’t. Each group was then tested against the factors of success. The results were quite clear.

Here are some of the major findings (you can download the entire report at the bottom of the page):

Productive Marketing: Let the Number Crunching Begin!

Posted on March 26, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

The results of our Productive Marketing Survey are in!

We’re crunching the numbers as you read this; I’ve re-lived my school days talking with my statistician about regressions, correlations and confidence intervals. Yeah, you don’t have to worry about any of that stuff, fortunately. You’re gonna get all that normally-distributed goodness served up in easily-digestible portions.

Everyone who participated had lots to say about their success habits and their own success – thanks to everyone who participated! The data suggests some interesting things, and I can’t wait to share the full results with you!

In just a couple of days we will be releasing the anonymous results to all the partner blogs who helped us spread the word. Look for these great blogs, and us, to write about the results over the next couple of weeks.

Until then, here are some interesting statistical nuggets so far:

Super People are Pretty Normal

Posted on March 24, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

We got only a few short hours before the survey comes to a close, so if you haven’t yet, can I ask you for a big favor?

Can you take the survey?

It’s multiple choice and will take you 10 minutes, no more. Thank you. It’s much appreciated.

It’s been a great month so far on Firepole Marketing. We’ve been discussing the topic of success and productivity as it pertains to marketing our businesses.

Our survey is open as I write this.

We shared some great productivity tips , some thought provoking videos, some pretty stunning statistics, crowd-sourced a list of critical habits to kill it as an entrepreneur and some really great interviews with super-achievers like Gini Dietrich, Michael Sliwinkski, our own Danny Iny and soon to come, Josh Fields Millburn from The Minimalists and Erin Blaskie.

Whew! That’s a lot to take in.

And a lot to learn from.

So after doing all the research on the most commonly accepted success habits, putting together this content and most significantly, interviewing all these successful people, what do you think is the most interesting takeaway?

All these super-people? Not so super…

How I Wrote 14 Posts and 17,481 Words in 6 Days

Posted on March 22, 2012 | In Firepole Marketing Updates

I was under the gun.

I had promised guest posts to eleven different bloggers, and had three more to write for my own blog.

It was Sunday morning, and it all had to happen by Friday night.

No ifs, no buts, and no extensions – my readers were expecting content, and when you promise a post to Brian Clark or Darren Rowse, you’ve sure as hell got to deliver!

And it’s not like I had all week to write, either. It was business as usual, serving clients, and doing all of the things that are a normal part of my life.

So I buckled down and wrote the posts. Three hours a day for six days. That’s eighteen hours to write 14 posts and 17,481 words. 77 minutes per post, and 971 words per hour.

Does this sound impressive? Well, it shouldn’t. Here’s why…

Help us with the Productive Marketing Survey

Posted on March 18, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

Are you an entrepreneur always looking for the next great tip, tool or idea to make you more effective?

Are you a student of self-development, keen to try on a new behavior or ingrain that new habit that will further you along the path to success?

Or are you just curious what are the best habits shared by successful entrepreneurs?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then we need your help!

We are conducting “The Productive Marketing” survey which opens TODAY.

As mentioned in our post two days ago, we’ve all heard various idea, behavior, habits that seem to be told and re-told as being keys to the success of entrepreneurs. Work off lists. Get exercise and plenty of sleep. Plan your day in advance. And so on.

But which of these actually correlate to success or improvement?

Let’s try to find out.

Firepole Marketing, with the support of our Premier Sponsor Nozbe.com is hosting a survey that aims to get answers to these questions. We hope you will help us by completing the survey.

By participating in the survey, you’ll help all of us better understand the factors that contribute to success and accomplishment and to find out which ones we should seriously consider adopting for ourselves. And of course, you’ll get free access to the summarized results.

Did we mention all the other blogs participating in the survey? Each of the participating blogs are participating as very generous Promotion Partners to help us spread the word, get respondents and sharing the results later this month.

Peter Vogopoulos is a marketing and business coach, university lecturer and co-founder of Firepole Marketing. It seems like he’s going to moonlight as a statistician, too.

Critical habits to KILL it as an Entrepreneur?

Posted on March 15, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

In my recent post Staying Sane as a New Parent and Business Owner, I shared how my life changed after becoming a father and how it impacted my business.

What I didn’t share was how productivity-obsessed I was forced to become as a result.

I kept on asking, how can I squeeze more juice out of 20 minutes? How can I be a mean, lean, execution machine? How can I be more effective?

If you’re a sucker for tips, tricks and habits that make one successful, you’ll like what we’ve got coming…

Notice that I said “more effective” and not “more efficient”.

Back when I was doing my MBA, my management accounting professor (and now colleague – how weird is that? I still call him “Sir” and he rolls his eyes at me and reminds me his name is “Juan”) used to school us on the being effective vs. efficient. He distilled it down to one sentence.

You should be effective, because you can be very efficient doing the wrong things.

Is Being Perfect Hurting Your Business? (video)

Posted on March 11, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

Hi Firepole Marketing readers!

My name is Steve Murphey and in this video I want to talk about the perils of trying to be perfect.

As marketers we face a lot of competition every day and it’s easy to get caught up trying to be better than everyone else. And the only way to do that is to be perfect. All. the. time. or at least that what we think.

Yet perfection can be a serious problem simply because we end up drastically reducing the amount of work we actually produce.

Trust me, your work will never be perfect.

There will always be aspects or features you don’t like but are unable to fix. Maybe it’s timing, budgetary, technology or resources…

Distractions, Wasted Time and the Entrepreneur’s Work Life Balance

Posted on March 9, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

It all comes down to work-life balance, right?

I mean, really – when it comes to the whole subject of entrepreneurship, that’s what it’s really all about.

What’s that old saying? “I’m an entrepreneur. I choose which 90 hours of the week I work.” Sounds like you?

Imagine for a moment that entrepreneurs really do work 90 hours every week (we’ll get into whether that’s true or not a bit later in the post). That leaves just 78 hours for everything else. Take away about 7 hours a night for sleeping (optional, for some) and you’ve got just 28 hours left to fit in all the rest of your life.

No one can keep that up forever.

But… what if there was a way to get more QUALITY out of those hours?

Sound crazy? Let’s look at some numbers:

3 Things You Can Do TODAY to Improve Your Productivity

Posted on March 5, 2012 | In Tips and Ideas

How many times have you thought “if only there were more hours in the day?”

Well, the fact is that you can’t have more hours in the day, but you can get more productive with the hours that you’ve already got!

That’s what Firepole Marketing is going to focus on all of this month – getting more bang out of each and every marketing minute.

There are lots of great systems (e.g. Getting Things Done, by David Allen) and tools (e.g. Nozbe, by Michael Sliwinski) but sometimes the little things we do can also make a big difference in our productivity.

Here are three things you can do starting today that will improve your productivity…

Staying Sane as a New Parent and Business Owner

Posted on March 2, 2012 | In Firepole Marketing Updates

Hi, I’m Peter.

You know, Peter. Peter Vogopoulos. The other guy from Firepole Marketing?

*Sigh*

One of the wonderful things about being part of Firepole Marketing is connecting with awesome people who like what we do. When I say “Peter Vogopoulos” they usually say “hello”. When they hear “Firepole Marketing”, their (virtual) faces light up and they say “Oh yeah, Danny Iny! I know him… I love his stuff. What was your name again?”

Truthfully, it doesn’t bother me in the least. I’ve taken a quieter role within Firepole Marketing by choice, but am thrilled with what’s going on. And I can’t expect anything different. After all, I didn’t guest blog my way to notoriety, run a marathon, write a book about engagement, found a start up, get an MBA, or get married while taking a blog from nothing to success.

But I did something that changed my life. More than any of those things would have.

I had a baby.

Calling Bullshit on the Lie Your Prospects Tell You

Posted on February 27, 2012 | In Firepole Marketing Updates

Yep, it’s true. Your prospects are lying to you.

Maybe it’s just a few of them, and maybe it’s a lot – but the lie is there.

They say it, and it stops your sale dead in its tracks, because you believe it, and because you don’t want to push, don’t want to pry, and don’t want to be indelicate.

But it’s not right – not for them, and not for you.

Because they aren’t just lying to you – they’re lying to themselves, too…

The Big Lie That Your Prospects Tell

The big lie comes in a lot of different variations.

“It’s not in the budget.”

“I’m not in a position to do it right now.”

“I don’t have the money.”

“It’s really too expensive for me.”

But it always boils down to four little words: “I can’t afford it.”

To which I politely say… bullshit!

At least 99% of the time…

Why It’s a Lie 99% of the Time

First of all, let me concede that there are two situations in which “I can’t afford it” is the truth:

  1. Super-high ticket items being sold to normal people… we’re talking yachts, mansions, private jets, and submarines. This situation is beyond the scope of this post (sorry, but if you’re selling yachts, mansions or submarines, you’ll have to check back next time).
  2. Anything being sold to someone who’s flat-out broke… meaning that there’s no money in their pockets or bank accounts, and their credit cards are maxed out. This is rare, but sometimes real, and my heart goes out to you if that’s your situation (and I recognize that some people are, which is one of the reasons why I made Engagement from Scratch! available as a free download).

Most people don’t fall into either of these two categories, though. They may not be rolling in the dough, but to say that can’t afford what you’re selling just isn’t true – if they really wanted to, they could buy it.

In all of those cases, when you hear the words “I can’t afford it”, it really means one of two things:

Truth #1: I Can’t Afford It = I Don’t Trust You

You’ve painted a picture of the beautiful outcome that your offer will create for anyone who buys it, and it really does sound wonderful… except that they aren’t buying – both literally and figuratively!

This hurts to hear, and most people don’t want to say it… which is why they say that they can’t afford it, instead. It’s a white lie that is meant to protect your feelings, and they say it with the best of intentions.

But underneath those good intentions lies the sad truth that they don’t believe you can deliver on the promises that you’ve made. They don’t trust you.

So what can you do? Plenty! You can…

Do you get the idea? It’s not that they aren’t interested, they’re just scared. So show them that they’re in good hands, and the fear will melt away.

But more often than not, the problem is much, much worse. They trust you, but they just don’t want what you’re selling…

Truth #2: I Can’t Afford It = I Don’t Want It

It’s not that they don’t have the money at all, it’s just that they don’t have the money for you.

The rosy, beautiful, idealized picture that you painted doesn’t actually look rosy, beautiful or ideal to the person you’re talking to.

It’s that simple.

And why don’t they want it? It could be one of two reasons:

  1. You’re talking to the wrong person. It’s the wrong target audience, the wrong need, or the wrong timing. You’re selling something that people just don’t want. If that’s the case, you have a problem, and you need to go back to the drawing board of getting to know your target audience.
  2. They’re afraid. Maybe they’re afraid of success, and maybe they’re afraid of failure. Maybe they’re sabotaging themselves, and maybe they’re afraid to hold themselves accountable.

I’m sure you know why I’m talking about this…

Yep, you guessed it, it’s about “Marketing That Works”

As you probably know, our “Marketing That Works” training program is currently accepting new students. And as you probably already know, it’s a great program; you can see the details in this video, but in a nutshell, here’s what you get:

  • A full framework for building a thriving and profitable business
  • Five core modules and 26 lessons (six months of training)
  • The pre-loaded bonus MP3 player
  • Full instructor access and support (as much as you need – seriously)
  • A 1-on-1 “Borrow My Brain” phone strategy session with me ($250 value)

And why do you want all of this? Because it will lead to a thriving business with more prospects, more customers, more revenues and more profits.

That’s our promise to you, and we back it up with our iron-clad “extra $1,000/month” guarantee – if you don’t add $1,000/month to your bottom line within six months, we’ll give you your money back. In other words, we’re guaranteeing you a minimum of an extra $12,000/year.

And on top of all that, the first two weeks are a free trial.

So we’ve painted a beautiful picture, and we’ve given you every reason that we can think of to make it easy for you to trust us.

There’s really only one question left…

Do you want a thriving, profitable business, or don’t you?

It’s really that simple. We’re offering you the chance to have the business success that you say you want, and we don’t just say that you’ll get it – we guarantee it.

So do you want it?

You can tell us whatever you want, and that’s fine. Tell us you don’t have the money, or the time, or whatever.

But be honest with yourself.

Do you want a thriving, profitable business?

Do you want more leads, more customers, stable income, and the knowledge that you’re building a lifestyle and legacy that you can depend on?

Well, do you?

If the answer is “no”, or “not right now”, then that’s cool. We’ll still be around, and we’ll keep on serving up fun, interesting, entertaining, and valuable content for your education and enjoyment.

But if the answer is “yes”, then we’re waiting to show you how to make it happen.

So take a deep breath, and then take the plunge.

We’ll see you on the other side.
