Lean Startups, Word of Mouth Marketing, and Email – Best of the Web!

Posted on June 18, 2011 | In Best of the Web

Is it just me (and Montreal), or has it been getting really, really hot lately?

Seriously. Everything is in boxes because I’m moving in a few weeks – which means there’s no air conditioner.

Some days, it’s getting hard to stay focused!

But today is a little bit better, and so while I’m out enjoying the weather, I’ll leave you with our latest Best of the Web round-up:

A Day Made of Glass – This is just the coolest video I’ve seen in a while. I can’t wait to have some of those – watch it and leave a comment telling me what you think?

Expat Life Coach: The 4-Hour Workweek ruined my life – In one corner, we have John Falchetto, and in the other, we have Tim Ferriss. No, just kidding – but John does have some important criticism of the 4-Hour Workweek concept, that I happen to agree with.

Instigator Blog: Lessons Learned Launching a Lean Startup Accelerator – In this post, Ben Yoskovitz shares lessons that he has learned since the foundation of his lean startup accelerator. Very interesting read!

Promo Products Blog: How Does This Business Thrive Exclusively on Word-of-Mouth Marketing? – Awesome word of mouth marketing case study from Jana Quinn – you’ll enjoy it!

GetElastic: A/B and Multivariate Test Validity: Beware of Bad Data! – Split testing is one of those things that everybody talks about, but very few people do properly (I’ll have more to say on that soon… stay tuned). This post does a great job of pointing out the spots where most split testing efforts fall down.

Jeff Goins Writer: Why Email Kills Productivity – Jeff, respect! I’m proud to say that according to your scale, I’m an email ninja – and I hope your other readers will be able to say the same… ;)

The Suitcase Entrepreneur: Why The Money Really Is In The Email List – I recently connected with Natalie Sisson, and I’m very happy to feature this post of hers in our round-up. It’s great – go read it!

Pushing Social: 4 Reasons Businesses Shouldn’t Use Social Media – I love it when people have the guts to step away from the me-too crowd and talk about why a trend might not be a good fit for your business!

{grow}: Research shows Facebook emotional boost is like marriage – Mark Schaefer had me at “research”, and in addition to being informative and useful, the post provides a really entertaining insight into users of the platform.

Guest Posts and Mentions

I’ve been busy with other things, so there’s only been one guest post in the last couple of weeks:

Problogger: Writing to Attract, Retain, and Engage – If you want to spice up your writing, I’ve got a guide on exactly how to do it. Check it out, and leave a comment!

(Another great post to read about writing, from Darren Rowse, is 10 Tips for Opening Your Next Blog Post)

I was also very pleased to see my last Copyblogger guest post mentioned on QuickRegister.net. :)

You bet, Jeff. I’ve been preaching this email policy for ages, and I was really gratified to see it in your post! :)

Some great articles Danny. I thought Falchetto’s Tim Ferris article was excellent, and much needed in that realm.

Love round up posts Danny and cool seeing you do this.

Keep rockin.

Thanks, Marcus. What did you think of the glass video? It totally blew my mind. :)

Hi Danny,

Thanks for including me in here, with some of my favorite entrepreneurs, Natalie the expat Kiwi and Mark Schaefer.

Congrats again on your Copyblogger guest post :)

Hi Danny! This is a great post!  I have to laugh though … I saw “The Day Made of Glass” and yes it was incredibly cool; however, the freak, germ-a-phob in me just kept thinking how many fingerprints and how dirty thinks could get … it whacked me totally out! I think the “perfect” family was just way over the top – and I’m a neat freak, but it made me wonder when they slept if their sheets wrinkled or did some glass robot made keep them perfect… wacky, I know. Love coming to your site! :)

Have an awesome weekend!

Much kindness,

Elena

Haha, I know what you mean – I get that same feeling whenever I see an iPhone or iPad… “all those fingerprints!” :D

Thanks for the mention, Danny!

I recently subscribed to a number of RSS feeds (What’s up, 1999?) including Firepole Marketing, and I’ve gone back to “star” web roundups like this. What an excellent assortment of posts. I’ll be sure to check out a bunch of them.

Good luck with the move!

Hey Jana, if it makes you feel any better, I still don’t use RSS- just email. :)

Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Hey Danny! Congrats on the the mentions and the guests posts! Looks like you’ve definitely been a busy guy! :)

Hey thanks for sharing all of the posts above. I particularly really like the “A day made of glass” video. I has seen this before, somewhere else. How cool would it be to be able to live in a world where all of that is possible. I really don’t think that’s too far off.

The one thing that I really get from that video however, is that it’s a “vision”. The minds responsible for putting this video together have a vision of what the future will look like and that’s how all entrepreneurs should start – with a vision. A vision of themselves and how their lives will look in the future and what kind of impact they will have on humanity or the free markets.

What do you think Danny!

Hector, I completely agree with you, and I really like that you’ve drawn this point out – it all starts with a vision, and then it’s a matter of seeing it clearly enough, and believing in it enough, to help others see what you see. Very well put! :)
